Taking A Hot Bath May Burn As Many Calories As A Run, Researchers Say!

Those of you who are not any fans of exercise will be happy to learn that a bath might be as effective as exercise regarding their effects on your health.

According to Dr. Steve Faulkner, a researcher at Loughborough University, the benefits of bathing resemble the ones of exercising, including aiding in type II diabetes prevention.

As the explained, although a hot bath is primarily associated with relaxation, recent studies have started to discover how “passive heating” can improve health.

Naturally, biking burned more calories, but the hot soak in a bath at 104 degrees Fahrenheit used as many calories as a 30-minute walk.

“The overall blood sugar response to both conditions was similar, but peak blood sugar after eating was about 10% lower when participants took a hot bath compared with when they exercised,” Dr. Faulkner reports.

He also added that the anti-inflammatory properties of exercise are critical for immune systems and help us combat diseases: “This suggests that repeated passive heating may contribute to reducing chronic inflammation, which is often present with long-term diseases, such as type II diabetes.”

This study, which was published not long ago, also suggests that hot baths, saunas and other forms of “passive heating” are capable of reducing inflammation. This discovery has been backed up by science in a larger study.

But a warning: As noted after the study leaked, not all calories are created equal. For instance, 200 calories of spinach are far better for people than 200 calories of candy. Also, the benefits of exercise go far beyond the calorie numbers.

“Calories lull us into this sort of complacent bartering. They give us a false sense of security that we can do damaging things so long as we zero out the balance,” wrote James Hamblin, a senior editor for the magazine. “Though maybe that sort of belief system, however flawed, has a calming effect. Like a bath.”
